Imagine a wine that is the result of a blend of the best barrel of red wines from five different winemakers and a port from the the best casks of vintage Port from the exceptional 2017 vintage.
The Vale do Douro was an unknown river valley ‘somewhere in western Europe’, when João Ferreira Álvares Ribeiro, Jorge Roquette, Dirk van der Niepoort, Cristiano van Zeller & Vito Olazabal teamed up in 2003 as the ‘Douro Boys’.
They wanted to make their native wine region better known in general, to introduce their red wines to the world at large, and to reposition the Port wines on the market. They have accomplished all of this.
Today, the Douro Valley figures as an indispensible section on any sophisticated wine list. To celebrate their fifteenth anniversary, each of the five estates Quinta do Vallado, Quinta do Crasto, Niepoort, Quinta Vale D. Maria and Quinta do Vale Meão has sacrificed its best barrel of red wine and their best cask of vintage Port from the exceptional 2017 vintage.
After comprehensive & extensive tastings, the winegrowers have created a stunning red cuvée from these exquisite component wines, along with a sensational vintage Port. These two special edition bottlings will be released on 10 October 2019.
An exclusive auction in a gorgeous setting
On 10 October, the Douro Boys Cuvée 2017 & the Douro Boys Vintage Port 2017 will be put up for auction. Just as with the two previous cuvées (2005 & 2011), British auctioneer Peter Mansell (wine specialist at Christie’s in London) will once again conduct the auction. Both the red wine cuvée and the vintage Port are bottled exclusively in magnums and will be offered in lots of various sizes.
Many of these lots will also incorporate rarities from the cellars of the Douro Boys or exclusive private experiences with the winegrowers, stays in hotels, or tastings.
Because of the varying nature of the different lots (ranging from a single magnum up to 120 items), wine industry customers (importers, distributors, merchants, wine buyers, sommeliers) and private wine collectors alike can join in.
Bids can be placed in writing, or live over the telephone. But… the absolutely most memorable experience would be to attend in person, and catch auction fever with the picturesque backdrop of steep hillsides laced with the Douro’s intricately terraced vineyards.
Douro 2017 –a vintage that one must definitely have in the cellar!
It is a vintage that is particularly impressive in the Douro. It’s not only the still wines (red & white both) that show fabulous balance and potential for maturing potential – above all, the Port is simply sensational laced with the Douro’s intricately terraced vineyards.
