COPENHAGEN: Restaurant Alchemist which opened four months ago has been awarded the restaurant of the year award in Denmark at the White Guide Gala last week.
After only four months of opening Alchemist was awarded this year’s top award during the release of the national restaurant guide White Guide Denmark. The position was secured by reaching a score of 98 points out of 100, and thereby reaching the number one position on the “Global Masterclass” list, closely followed by Noma in Copenhagen and Koks in the Faroe Islands.
“We are extremely grateful for this prize. It has been a long laborious process to create the restaurant and right now I am so thankful to our amazing team for pulling this off”, said Head Chef and co-owner of Alchemist, Rasmus Munk, after the award ceremony.
White Guide motivated the choice of Alchemist by noting that “The experience is on such a large scale that such a totality has never been seen before” and that “the sustainable message is not only present in the preparations, ingredients, interior and thought. It is also explicit in the kitchen’s creations that verge on the provocative but never cross the line to being unrecognizable” and ultimately that “the music and visuals support the theatrical state in which we all can stop and think about what it is we do to ourselves, to what we eat and to the planet we inhabit. To master so much in just one meal is unrivalled.”
Alchemist is the brain child of Chef Rasmus Munk, who had already stirred up a storm at the first incarnation of Alchemist in 2015 – where a cavalcade of politically charged dishes were served to 15 diners a night at a tiny dark and mysterious gastro bar.
On June 4 Munk launched the new, 20 times bigger, Alchemist, with the aim to push the borders when it comes to the concept of fine dining. At Alchemist, art, drama, gastronomy and spectacular visuals blend into one all-encompassing multisensory experience.
There are 50 “impressions” on the menu – many which comment on serious issues like force-feeding, food waste and plastic pollution as well as delivering humoristic nods to both Andy Warhol and Casper the friendly ghost. A planetarium dome with a diameter of 57 feet constitutes the main dining room at the heart of the restaurant.
Munk himself has named this new style of dining Holistic Cuisine.
Alchemist is fully booked until December 31, and will open again for bookings for January to March tomorrow, November 4 at 17:00 CET.
