Mauro Colagreco breaks into list with restaurant Ceto after making it to Best of the Best with Mirazur
There are 12 new entries in the 51-100 list that was unveiled today 8 June. The list was revealed ahead of the annual awards ceremony taking place in Valencia on 20 June. In the 21st year of the awards, the extended ranking showcases restaurants across five continents. The list is the result of votes from the 1,080 voters from renowned international chefs and food journalists to travelling gastronomes – who create The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list being revealed in less than two weeks’ time.
But the biggest news is clearly Mauro Colagreco’s new entry Ceto which entered into the 51-100 list despite the fact that his flagship restaurant Mirazur is no longer eligible to take part in the competition after being named no 1. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list changed the rules a few years ago making it impossible for restaurants that won the award to be eligible again.
The 51st place on the list is taken by Narisawa from Tokyo, followed by Hof van Cleve from Belgium.
The highest new entry in the 51-100 list is Merito in Lima which indicates that it is likely that there will be higher new entries in the top 50 list when it is released on 20 June.
The 12 new entries hail from 11 different cities from Quito and Panama City to Istanbul and Paris.
15 entries come from Asia, 21 from Europe, 6 from South America and three from the Middle East and Africa.
With three new entries from South America, two new cities – Quito and Panama City – are represented in the list for the first time in its history: Nuema in Quito is voted in at No.79 and Maito in Panama City at No.100. Two restaurants in this year’s list are from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Lasai (No.58) and Oteque (No.76) – alongside one from Peru, with Mérito, Lima (No.59).
Five restaurants from the USA and one from Mexico placing in the 51-100 list. From New York City, Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare places at No.61 and Cosme at No.73. Healdsburg’s SingleThread places at No.68, while Saison, San Francisco, re-enters the 51-100 list at No.98. From Mexico, at No.54 is Alcalde, Guadalajara.
With 21 restaurants featured in the list, Europe also gains four new entries: Enrico Bartolini, Milan (No.85); Kei, Paris (No.93); Ceto, the latest opening from Mauro Colagreco in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (No.95) and Ricard Camarena Restaurant, located in the host city of Valencia (No.96). From Turkey, two Istanbul restaurants placed in the list, with a re-entry from Neolokal (No.63) and new entry Turk Fatih Tutak (No.66).
Belgium has one restaurant in the list, Hof Van Cleve, Kruishoutem (No.52), while two are located in Copenhagen: Jordnær (No.57) and Kadeau (No.91). In addition to its two new entries, four further restaurants placed from France: from Paris, Arpège (No.62), Le Clarence (No.67) and Alléno Paris au Pavillon Ledoyen (No.78), alongside Flocons de Sel, Megève (No.80). Two restaurants from Germany are voted into the extended ranking, Ernst, Berlin (No.55) and Tantris, Munich (No.77). Spain is represented by Aponiente in El Puerto de Santa María (No.64), Azurmendi in Larrabetzu (No.81), and Enigma in Barcelona (No.82) as well as host city Valencia entering the list for the first time. Three London restaurants feature including Brat (No.53), a re-entry from Core by Clare Smyth (No.71) and Lyle’s (No.86).
Following the launch of Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2022, the region has continued to grow in its gastronomic recognition, with one restaurant from the United Arab Emirates placing in the 51-100 ranking: Dubai’s Ossiano (also a new entry at No.87). From South Africa, Cape Town stalwarts Fyn and La Colombe place at No.75 and No.94 respectively.
Asia boasts 15 entries in the 51-100 ranking this year, spread across seven cities and including three new entries. Three restaurants from Japan are: Narisawa, Tokyo (No.51), La Cime, Osaka (No.60) and Sazenka, Tokyo (No.83). Bangkok is represented by Sorn (No.56), Sühring (No.72), and new entries Nusara (No.74), and Potong (No.88), while Seoul has one restaurant featured in the list, Mingles (No.89). After its success at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants earlier this year, Singapore has four restaurants in the 51-100: Burnt Ends (No.65), Zén (No.69), Meta (No.84) and new entry Labyrinth (No.97).
