Two Belgian restaurants, The Jane in Antwerp and La Villa in the Sky in Brussels were awarded 2 Michelin stars when the new results for Belgium and Luxembourg were announced on Monday 14 December. Both restaurants have been open for less than 2 years and got their first star within less than a year of their opening.
The Jane, by former 3 Michelin star chef Sergio Herman and chef Nick Bril, has been winning accolades for its stunning food and design since it opened last year in a former church in Antwerp. It is considered to be one of the most stunning restaurants in the world and has also made it to the front cover of a book called Let’s Go Out Again which features interiors of restaurants, bars and unique food places.
La Villa in the Sky by chef Alexandre Dionisio in Brussels was in the news last year because it was awarded a star despite only having been open for a few weeks when the guide was issued. The reason for this was that the chef had moved together with his team from his own restaurant in the Brussels centre to La Villa in the Sky, a stunning restaurant at the top of the IT tower on Avenue Louise. The restaurant is known not only for its exceptional cuisine but also for its stunning views and is the first restaurant of its kind in the Belgian capital.
There were no surprises at the very top. The number of three Michelin star restaurants in Belgium is still three with Geert Van Hecke of De Karmeliet retaining three stars despite the fact that he announced he would be closing the restaurant next year, together with Peter Goossens (Hof Van Cleve) and Gert de Mangeleer (Hertog Jan).
The other new two Michelin star restaurant in Belgium is d’Eugenie a Emilie in Baudour. The total number of 2 Michelin star restaurants in Belgium is now 20.
The three star in the capital city remains elusive with Brussels despite the fact that it now has five 2 Michelin star restaurants and 13 restaurants with one Michelin star. There is one new Michelin star restaurant in Brussels (Alexandre) and a second just outside the Belgian capital (Alain Bianchin in Jezus-Eik).
The other new Michelin star restaurants in Belgium are Bistro du Nord in Antwerp, dEssensi (near Antwerp), Danny in Maasmechelen, Le Filori in Ecaussinnes, Le Comptoir de Marie in Mons and Philippe Faucet in Saint Georges sur Meuse near Liege.
